A report published on the BBC website today shows a research carried out by scientists at the University of Edinburgh analysing celebrity Twitter messages in a bid to find out how happy the senders are.
The researchers believed the study could provide insights into the emotional well-being of the general population as they looked at word patterns in the tweets of 13 celebrities.
Basketball player Shaquille O’Neale ( woo hoo!!! I love Shaq) was said to be the happiest tweeter, followed by cyclist Lance Armstrong and television presenter Jonathan Ross (one of my favourites although the Andrew Sachs episode can’t be easily forgotten).
The rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg was the least happy. (Culled From The BBC Website)
The study, which was carried out in partnership with a technology firm, found that the majority of celebrity messages were happy and positive.
Hmmh!! I kept thinking about what I had read for a few minutes and then proceeded to ask my colleagues several questions with a view of gathering enough information for this topic.
This post focuses on the definition of happiness, what stimulates or promotes it and finally the importance and benefits.
What is Happiness?
Happiness is a state of well-being and contentment. It could also be a pleasurable, fulfilling or satisfying experience.
Dr. Martin Seligman believes happiness dissolves into three different ideas, each of which is separately buildable and measurable.
They are as follows:
a) Pleasant life (having as much positive emotion and as little negative emotion as possible),
b) The engaged life (being completely absorbed by the challenges you face at work, love, play etc.
c) The meaningful life (knowing what you highest strengths are and using them to belong to and serve something that is bigger than you are.)
What promotes Happiness?
This section would focus on a list few things you participate in, experience, and indulge yourselves in order to derive happiness.
They are as follows:
- Good food lol!!!
- Making new friends or meeting new people.
- Counting your blessings.
- Positive interaction with spouses, children, friends, families, colleagues……..
- Showing genuine acts of kindness to different people.
- Exercising regularly.
- Engaging in a hobby
- Being passionate about things that add value to your life.
- Although it’s slightly controversial but being wealthy or rich (living within your means) also promotes happiness.
…………………………Please note the list is endless…………………………………..
Once again the aim of this post is to define happiness, find out what promotes it and highlight the importance and benefits.
The words of Maxim Gorky constantly leave an echo in my mind; ‘Happiness always looks small while you hold it in your hands, but let it go, and you learn at once how big and precious it is.’
In no particular order here are 40 Benefits Of Happiness.

- A dose of happiness is really therapeutic.
- If you are happy you are likely in the future to have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy (Dr Derek Cox, Director of Public Health)
- Happiness improves your social life.
- It gives you a good feeling within.
- Happiness boosts positive thoughts and expectations.
- Happiness makes you flexible and easily adapts to change.
- Laughter thrives and grows on happiness
- Happiness serves as an energy booster.
- It creates job satisfaction and increases good performance in your workplace.
- It increases your level of productivity and personal growth.
- It aids in effective conflict management
- It creates and enhances successful relationships with you friends, family, colleagues….
- It lowers blood pressure reducing the impact of stress.
- It gives you peace of mind.
- Happiness increases the level of your motivation.

- Happiness gives you a meaningful life
- Happiness brings about relaxation.
- It enhances positive and constructive communication with people.

- It boosts your self esteem and self confidence.

Would you make an effort to live a happy and fulfilled life despite the struggles and challenges of life?

Ayo, hello again, and thank you for your happiness post and a list that could go on forever. Another wonderful article.
I would add that perception of happiness is directly related to how much you are here in the moment, in the present, in the now of your life. So many of us lose happiness when we look back, and our fears of the future also diminish being happy. When we are fully here in the actual details of our present life, being and living, we find happiness in what we are and what we have now, even in the midst of difficult challenges.
Happiness is not something we “get” outside of ourselves, it is a state of being within ourselves, and we rarely enter into it when we are pulled outwards in our seeking.
And another quote:
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” (Gautama Siddharta – founder of Buddhism – 563-483 B.C.)
So once we tap that state of happiness within ourselves, we needn’t hesitate to spread it around and share what we are of ourselves!
Thank you so much, Ayo. Morning greetings from the rainy mountains in Japan to you – Catrien Ross.

Hi Dear Ayo,
Love the happiness focus! And I love the first thing on your list food! Are you a fellow-Taurean?
. We do so enjoy good food!
I love the ending quote which I think sums it up very well. Happiness is largely a CHOICE. We can focus on what is working well most of the time and feel good or focus on what isn’t working (which can come habitual) and and feel unhappy.
Ironically, the habit of focusing on the negative often prevents us from noticing that many things are going extremely well.
This isn’t to discount that we all go through tough times. Still, maintaining a great perspective speaks volumes, I think, to the quality of life we live.
You choose great topics, Ayo, and flesh them out so very well!
Thank you and hope all is great with you – and that you are HAPPY!

Fabulous post! You had me at good food. *lol* I love that list too and might add one more item to it…happiness makes you pretty! We have all seen it. Happy people, truly happy people, they just glow from the inside out. Must be all those benefits you listed that combines to making people shine. The world needs shiny people.

thanks for contributing to the topic cc, i totally agree happiness makes us pretty and we really need to shine.
have a lovely day too
Ayo, I am compelled to return again, especially in response to Lauren’s comment about enjoying good food. In praising your post it is interesting that Lauren then used the word “flesh” as in “you flesh them out so well.” Which probably also means that you embody what you teach by eating it, too. Do you?
Such a joyfully fleshy start to this new day – an embodiment of shared wisdom and wonderful food for thought. Just to make it real and grounded right now, how about sharing a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit?
Deliciously enjoying life in Japan – Catrien Ross.

Ayo,
Are we on the same wavelength? I was going to make a post about Happiness this week. whoohoo!
) I love this and I feel the happiness juices flowing.
I have always been a very happy child. I am not sure why really, I have every bit of reason to feel the opposite my parents left my siblings at a young age. I was 3 yrs old. And the only parents I ever knew my grandma and my aunt died 7 years later. YET I always this feelings of being “happy for no reason” (from Marci Shimoff book)
Just as a anyone would have a vision board about his/her life. They should also put on a board, images and pictures of being happy whether iot’s aperson laughing, being out in nature, and being totally free.
Just as your income will determine with the 5 closes friends you have so will your happiness. And I will quote Dalai Lama when he says, “my business is to be happy”
Thank You Ayo
I will write most of it in my journal to remind me.

hi therese,
how are you?
it’s amazing how you’ve turned around everything to work out for your good. You havent allowed previous events obstruct your happiness… now thats inspiring.
you take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day.
Hello,
What a lovely post, I feel inspired to do something today to make me even happier!
I have just been reading another article about being grateful so it was interesting to see you had listed counting your blessings. I think so often people are negative and don’t realise all the things in their lives which they could be grateful for. Whe we finally see them we realise we are actually very very lucky!
Many thanks,
Kate

Hello kate,
how are you?
i am glad you are inspired to do something that would make you even happier today.
it’s important we count our blessings, remain thankful and show gratitude for all that we’ve received and for the people around us
take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day
Hello Ayo,
Beautiful picture. The happiness is the solution to so many things in our lives. The list is great and it was wonderful reading the post. We all need to learn that happiness is the tree and all the great good effects are the fruits. We should learn to live in the shade of this tree.
Bye for now.
Cheryl
hi cheryl,
how are you?
I love the analogy of happiness being tree with fruits and once again thanks for your kind words.
do have a lovely day
Hi Ayo,
You discovered me, and now I discover you. What a world we live in!!
This post (as many I find here) is thought provoking and enjoyable. Thank you.
Seeing “defining” happiness is something that makes life more enjoyable. I believe there is happiness in appreciating the small things, the steps of your life if you will. And you can find it in all areas from being of service to financial, and from being open to enjoying family and friend, etc.
Tossly has given a small steps definition to happiness, success and love (impossible you say … you be the judge). For anyone who might be interested it’s here : http://bit.ly/a8tFal
And there is a book trailer about awesomeness on you tube that beautifully (in 2:49 minutes) shows the joy/happiness/awesomeness of small things. If you’re interested it’s here (and it’s wonderful): http://bit.ly/b3AHUc
Thanks again.
You too have a lovely day (that makes me happy) … and have fun, Jim

thanks for stopping by and i love the point you make or finding happiness in little things
i will have a look at the links you’ve highlighted.

Great list Ayo!
I agree on all the points that you’ve touched on. If I may add, Happiness also is a catalyst for living in the moment. When were accepting of our state of happiness we find ourselves more accepting of the current moment. Although it’s not always easy, happiness is a choice that we must make.
Thanks for sharing Ayo!!

Hi Ayo,
Thank you for sharing your joyful spirit. I’ve followed Shaq for a while — he makes me laugh. He seems to be a source of happiness for you too
You made a wonderful list that speaks to engaging in each moment and finding value in it — regardless of imperfections. There is no disputing the importance and benefits of happiness. What is important is finding our unique way to stimulate it and express it and cultivate it.
I sent you a message on FB. I will email you w/ copy by Monday.
Have a blessed weekend,

how are you?
i’m a shaq fan all the way lol!!! his style of play just grabs my attention
i have replied your mail on fb and i’m really looking forward to the article.
take care and have a lovely weekend.
I love this post! Thanks for sharing this, Ayo. In addition to your wonderful post, I think that happiness is knowing what a personwants in life; this means that an individual is able to identify his underlying values, his needs, and his passion. This helps him focus on the positive aspects of his life; happiness is thus achieved. It’s important that a person realize what’s important to him because this allows a person to figure out how to get it.
hi dawn,
how are you?
it’s great to have you here.
i think you’ve hit the nail on the head by mentioning the fact of happiness being achieved by knowing the importance of what we want constructively in our lives.
take care and enjoy the rest of the day
Hey Ayo, good and important post. Life to me is not worth living if you’re not happy. Be happy! It’s a decision we make.
