News Flash: People often think or have great ideas while sitting on the loo. (National Express – Metro Newspapers) lol!!

The post in context:

The Telegraph on the 8th of February 2010 published a report ‘You can really be bored to death study shows’. This was based on a research programme carried out by the University College London which studied the responses of 7,524 civil servants aged between 35 and 55, to deduce that people who complained of “high levels” of boredom in their lives were at double the risk of dying from heart disease or a stroke than those who find life entertaining.

What caught my attention was the suggestion from Graham Price, a psychologist, who stated those who were bored should lift their spirits by thinking more about the needs of others.  I totally agree with the train of thought, but in order to get to that phase, you need to develop the habit of thinking constructively on events/situations that evolve around you.

Thinking refers to your way of reasoning, opinion or judgement. It becomes constructive because there’s an understanding that interpretations will often have a positive influence on your emotions. This shouldn’t be confused with positive thinking; a mental attitude which anticipates happiness, joy and a successful outcome of every situation and action.(I am not a complete fan of positive thinking because people can become overly optimistic because their optimism is not tempered with realism).

Thinking constructively involves taking time to look at several options surrounding a particular issue and taking responsibility for all your actions.

Francois Domergue stated ‘Some people study all their life and at their death they have learned everything except to think.’

The aim of this post is to list a few benefits of thinking constructively and hopefully encourage you to take it on as a way of life.

In no particular order here are 45 benefits of thinking constructively:

  • It enables you discover who you really are by looking inwards.
  • It fosters personal growth and development.
  • Thinking creates an avenue of opportunities.
  • It brings about constructive results.
  • The results of thinking could serve as a source of inspiration to others.
  • It enhances creativity.
  • It equips you with coping skills during difficult times in your life.
  • It promotes a better psychological and physical well being.
  • It upholds intellectual freedom by questioning all forms of assumption.
  • It allows you formulate ideas.
  • It lowers the risk of depression and reduces stress.
  • It reduces your level of gullibility.
  • Thinking promotes questions in your mind which increases your ability to learn new things.
  • It aids proper planning.
  • It promotes living a life of principles.
  • It saves time.
  • It boosts self confidence.
  • It improves and increases the level of your professionalism.
  • It increases your chances of succeeding in any endeavour.
  • It ensures you act cautiously instead of reacting spontaneously.
  • It channels all your energy to the issue at hand.
  • It aids in establishing positive relationships.
  • It creates/forms your perception to life’s issues
  • It eliminates certain fears that might spring up in the cause of trying to resolve an issue.
  • It promotes optimism.
  • It maximizes your ability.
  • It broadens your horizons and imaginations.
  • It fosters your peace of mind.
  • It allows you dissect facts from opinions.
  • It makes you smarter and quicker.
  • It eliminates complacency.
  • It enhances your self-worth.
  • It helps you focus on issues that could be of high importance.
  • It allows you create goals with a view to accomplishing them.
  • It creates some sort of independence.
  • It provides the opportunity to collate your facts or view before making any decisions.
  • It encourages an open-mindedness to change.
  • It enables you understand how the world and society works.
  • It increases your level of analytical skills.
  • From research, it’s been found to increase and improve academic performance.
  • It improves spending habits.
  • It enables you discover and overcome personal prejudices and biases.
  • It creates an opportunity for leadership.
  • It increases your chances of a job promotion when there is an evidence of progress made as a result of strategic thinking.
  • It improves the quality of your performance.

Once again the aim of this post is to highlight the benefits of thinking constructively with a view to making you understand the importance of thinking carefully before taking any action and accepting the responsibilities attached to your decisions.

I’ve got two questions to ask please.

  • Are you thinking at all?
  • Is there anyone bold enough to tell me he/she often thinks while sitting on the loo?(laugh!)

I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

I’m not embarrassed to say that I’m always thinking…yes, even in the loo :) – the truth is my mind is always going and I have to keep a notebook, my smartphone or some other method for jotting down those ideas that shoot through my mind while I’m indisposed.
In my opinion, boredom is a sign that people aren’t doing everything they should be doing in life and in serving others…

Ayo,

A great post and thank you for sharing. Thinking is a subject I’ve posted on a number of times. I do my thinking in a variety of places; I’ve just got to remember to take my notebook with me to make a note of my ideas. I’m getting there, slowly but surely

Regards
Paul

Hey Ayo, great list here!

One thing I noticed is that you said you’re not a big fan of positive thinking because people become too optimistic. I know what you mean by that. I also think that it’s not a good thing when that happens but when people have faith and reasoning to think positive, then it’s beneficial. They have to really believe that things will turn out for the good and even if it doesn’t, they will get something positive out of it such as experience or more knowledge.

Thanks for the great post by the way. Love it!

Hi faizal,
i’m glad you loved this post and understands my position on positive thinking, I believe we should be moderately optimistic (martin selligman, ilona boniwell have written various helpful reports on optimism). I also agree with you on people believing things will turn out for the best based on faith and reasoning but i think we shouldnt shield away from the approach to reality.
Hope you stop by again.

Great list Ayo!

I can’t tell you what I’m thinking on the loo because I’m usually checking email or Twitter so my train of thought can be anything.

However I can share my shower experiences (so to speak lol). I often think through what I need to do that do or how I need to approach a problem or situation when in the shower. I usually get great post ideas in the shower too – might be something to do with my relaxed state.

Sometimes I just let my mind wander and analyse what it wants to analyse and let it be but when I do that I find I can take 45min showers and I get into trouble for using up all the water!

laughing my head off ben!!
but on a serious note you’ve just proved that great thoughts come to our minds when we are in a state of relaxation.

Hello.

In fact I know so many people who come up with great ideas when they go to loo or after taking shower i.e. when they are relaxed. There are two aspects. One is the working mind and the other is the thinking mind. Thinking mind asks questions, provides answers, and asks further questions of those answers and goes on and on. I believe the thinking mind is active in loo or shower (lol) or when we are relaxed.

We all know the story how Archimedes came up with Archimedes Principle.

Excellent Post.

Ayo – Some excellent points to think on here. Looking through them all, its quite clear that the last 3 are interlinked :

Quality of performance improves, chance of promotion increased, leading to some kind of leadership role.
In regards to thinking – I think i’m thinking.LOL. For thinking on the toilet…Now thats a hard one.

@Cheryl:I was gonna be really clever and explain the thinking and creative brain thing(as someone explained this to me today) but you got there first. Nice one.

Hello Ayo,

When I was in school the Archimedes Principle was in Physics of Class 8 or 9th. But when he was lowering himself for a bath in the bath tub that is when he came up with the buoyancy principle. Because he was trying to relax himself and came up with the principle which was actually a breakthrough for many questions.

The story of the Archimedes Principle can be read @ http://www.light-science.com/bathtub1.html

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting.

Cheers,

Hey Ayo,

Yeah man I totally get this, I just wish I could take your advice lol.

I would like to focus on one point you made about ‘it saves time’ You are so right, infact I don’t think you know how right you actually are!

I tend to dive straight in and learn how to swim when I have hit the bottom, not allows the best strategy and to be honest working a full time job too, I need to focus more on thinking about things, so thanks for the reminder

Yes, Ayo, I do a different kind of thinking on the loo, in the shower, out for a walk. Kind of dreamy thinking. Right brain stuff. Kind of like what Cheryl says. Fun post!

Like everyone else, I’m thinking all the time, even when I’m sitting on the can. Although my thoughts then are usually: “OMG it stinks in here I can’t wait to get out”.

My biggest problem with thinking is that I never back up the thoughts to some external media like paper. I don’t carry a notebook for 3 reasons… 1) too cumbersome, 2) I’d lose the thing inside 5 minutes, 3) I can’t read my own hand writing. I don’t own a PDA or smart phone or laptop. I find recording “notes to self” into my cell phone to be too embarrassing.

Kind regards,
Steve.
